About

About Sculpture for Surgeons

In its 20+ year history SFS has delivered teaching to over 230 delegates. Aimed primarily at surgeons, but also welcoming those from other disciplines, it delivers professional-level sculptural tuition in a beautiful location in Marylebone, North London. Led by the plastic surgery consultant Mr Simon Withey [MS FRCS FRCS(Ed) FRCS (Plast)] Sculpture for Surgeons holds the philosophy that the observational skills acquired through sculptural practice are of great utility in the field of aesthetic, maxillofacial and reconstructive plastic surgery in terms of clearly visualising and shaping three dimensional anatomical form. These skills can only be acquired through the type of intensive active observation and feedback gained working with the 3-dimensional clay of this learning environment.

We are honoured to have as our tutor the sculptor Mr Luke Shepherd RCA (Cire Perdue) SWAc, a Royal College of Art graduate, who has exhibited his work internationally as well as worked as an artistic mentor and teacher of sculpture with over 30 years experience in this field. https://luke-shepherd.com/

His classic teaching technique takes delegates through the entire process from scratch to finished sculpture in a defined stepwise approach. All abilities are welcome and all materials supplied - often our delegates have never sculpted before, but just have the desire for a new experience and a fresh challenge. We keep the number of places available intentionally small (12 maximum) as this allows our tutor to give lots of attention to each individual and also keep the atmosphere intimate and relaxed.

The course takes place over 3 full days as this amount of time is required for immersion in the learning and practice the course involves. Generally our delegates find that time flies and we have to strongly encourage them to take breaks as, in their words: “I just need to work on this part a little more!”

At the end of the course you can choose to have your work fired and returned to you, or alternatively cast in bronze.

The course is badged by BAPRAS and participants receive 19.5 CME points.
